Thank you to everyone who came to our Portuguese Gourmet Wine Evening on Thursday evening. Matthew’s food was a revelation and the perfect match to the wines from the fabulous Esporao Estate in Alentejo, Portugal.

Added: 13/10/09 - National Restaurant Awards 2009 - The Results!
Yesterday we travelled up to the ‘National Restaurant of the Year’ Awards in London and were ecstatic to finish 80th amongst the UK’s Top 100 restaurants. Heston Blumenthal’s Fat Duck in Bray came in first with Gordon Ramsay at number 11, Raymond Blanc at number 14 and Mark Hix at number 60. As you can imagine, we’re all absolutely over the moon - especially Matthew who got to meet a few of his heroes!

Added: 07/10/09 - Taste of the West Awards 2009
The Jack has just been awarded top honours by Taste of the West in their annual hospitality awards. Not only did we win gold in the ‘Best Restaurant’ in Devon category but we were also the highest points scorer in the county so we now go forward to represent Devon in the regional finals later this autumn and battle it out against gold winners from Cornwall, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire. The overall title of ‘Best Restaurant in the South West’ will be announced in early December.

Restaurant Magazine have just announced the Jack as one of their Top 100 restaurants in the UK. The winners were compiled and voted for by the National Restaurant Awards Academy which is made up of prominent chefs, restaurateurs and food critics. Two days prior to getting the news, the Morning Advertiser also contacted us to say we have been included in their Top 500 independent freehouses.

Added: 02/07/09 - Resurge the Magnificent!
'Resurge' (the racehorse that we sponsor) was in action on Monday night at Windsor races. Trained here in Devon by Stuart Kittow she won the race comfortably by seven lengths. The only downside? We didn't have a bet on!

Added: 07/05/09 - Jack in the Green named one of the best!
The Jack has just been named one of Great Britain’s top pubs. Judges at Eat Out Magazine drew up their definitive ‘Best of the Best’ Top 100 pubs by combining independent press reviews, customer comments, recognition from regional and national guides together with respected industry accolades. Publications and professional bodies including Michelin, CAMRA, Taste of the West, Les Routiers and the Good Pub Guide were all used in the final selection.

Added: 29/04/09 - Beer Lovers raise a glass to Otter Amber
The new 4.0% beer from the Otter Brewery has just been awarded Silver at the South West’s biggest beer festival. Unveiled less than a month ago, Otter Amber - which fills the gap in strength between Otter Bitter and Otter Ale - surprised everyone by beating nearly 100 other beers to win Silver in the ‘Bitters and Pale Ales’ class at the Tuckers Maltings Beer Festival.

Added: 07/04/09 - Another fantastic achievement for Scott
Yesterday, in the finals of the South West Chef of the Year competition, Scott triumphed in the Young Professional class. Although a Pastry Chef by trade, his two dishes - a starter of pan fried plaice fillet with Bath sausage and caviar vinaigrette, followed by his 'Lamb Four Play' (1 bone rack of lamb in white bean purée, sauteed sweetbread purée and ratatouille, hot pot tartlet and peppered kidney) draw unanimous praise from the four judges; Michael Caines, Peter Gorton and Chris and James Tanner to give him the win.

Added: 09/11/08 - 'Flashes of genius' says the Telegraph
Susy Atkins, writing in Sunday's Stella magazine, is the latest to fall for the "heavenly food" at the Jack. From the "earthy intensity" of the lamb's sweetbreads with tiny diced ratatouille and black olives to the "soft and tender" roasted Talaton pork that was "accompanied by such a lovely, sweet, creamy cauliflower purée," the whole team were delighted with the overall score of 7.5/10.

Added: 06/10/08 - A star is born!
Scott is currently on cloud nine after being named International Pastry Chef of the Year. His Milk Chocolate Mousse with Strawberry and Rosewater Parfait was described as 'incredible' and he may now be asked to judge next year's competition. Scott will be travelling to France on an all expenses paid trip in January to meet and work with the world renowned French Pastry Chef Pierre Hermé followed by a week in the Champagne vineyards of Duval Leroy.
