Fine Devon Produce - Local Suppliers

Training with Shaun Hill at the revered Gidleigh Park for 2½ years taught Matthew the value in using superb Devon suppliers. Now, almost all of what is used is grown or reared from within a twenty-five mile radius of the kitchen of this Devon country pub.

Fillets, rib eyes, topside, sirloins and rumps of South Devon beef feature alongside local Talaton pork and Whimple lamb - all come from Steve at Country Farm Butchers in nearby Ottery St. Mary. Ducks and traditional free range chickens are supplied by Creedy Carver while pigeon, pheasant, partridge and wild duck are sourced from local shoots.

Freedom Foods smoked salmon, kiln roast salmon, smoked mackerel and trout are delivered from the Dartmouth Smokehouse while other seasonal fish including scallops, crab, mussels, halibut, line caught sea bass, gurnard, skate and brill, predominantly landed at Brixham, arrive in pristine condition from other Devon suppliers.

Local milk and butter is delivered by Dunn's Dairy, free range hen’s eggs come from Cobley Farm at Down St. Mary and apple juice is grown & pressed by Richard and Sue Smedley at Newton Poppleford. Close to 100 barrels of Otter Ale make the short journey from Luppitt (near Honiton) to this Devon country pub each year and together with Butcombe Bitter and Cornish Doom Bar account for 50% of our annual beer sales.

Of our other food suppliers in Devon we are also delighted to have Carolyn Bellinger on our doorstep. Together with her husband Paul she has returned her family farm to full productivity and is now a regular at the Topsham Slow Food Market. Between the two of them they grow the bulk of our herbs, salad leaves, edible flowers, spinach, carrots, leeks, artichokes, courgettes, tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, potatoes, onions, strawberries, golden raspberries, apples, quinces.... the list goes on!
